Newcastle bar owners left furious by Bank Holiday mess left in the Bigg Market
Newcastle city centre’s party capital was left strewn with takeaway wrappers and glass after Bank Holiday Sunday.
City centre bar bosses are “furious” after takeaway wrappers were left strewn across the Bigg Market.
In scenes reminiscent of May 2, the Newcastle was once again left a Bank Holiday-shaped mess.
And Damian Conway, chair of Newcastle City Pubwatch, said that bar owners were paying a small fortune to keep the city tidy and once again have been let down by irresponsible revellers.
He said: “After last Bank Holiday members came together and more guidance was given on how to keep the city clean and tidy.
“We spend a lot of money on security stopping people leaving bars with drinks and we contribute to the council clean up operation through the late-night levy.
“To see the state of the city once again after this weekend has made members very angry. The takeaway wrappers are a blight that run down the city.”
Labour MP Chi Onwurah, who represents Newcastle Central, said that no matter how drunk a person is they should always be able to find a bin.
She said: “It’s great to see people enjoying themselves in our city centre but we don’t expect to have to live with the litter after they’ve gone.
“Constituents regularly complain to me about litter and with all the cost pressures on the council it’s not fair they should have another mess to clear up.
“Businesses and people need to take responsibility for making sure our streets don’t get into this state. No matter how drunk you are you should always be able to find a litter bin.”
Earlier this month, councillor Nick Kemp, cabinet member regulatory services at Newcastle City Council, urged visitors to have more respect for the city.
He said: “People go around dropping rubbish anywhere and everywhere often when there is a litter bin within a few yards and clearly think it’s okay as someone else will come along and pick it up.
“But that is not right. I was always taught to put my litter in a bin or my pockets to take home.
“People say they are proud of this great city, a great way of showing that is keeping it tidy, by using the street bins.”
