Glass is one of the most widely recycled material in the UK, it can be recycled indefinitely as it does not degrade during the process, so it’s no wonder that many food manufacturers are rejecting plastic containers and going back to glass packaging.
Glass recycling has a positive impact on British businesses as it’s estimated that 500 jobs are created for every 100,000 tonnes of glass collected for recycling. If we as a country recycled all the glass we currently throw away, it would create 7,500 new jobs overnight.
Once collected, glass is sorted by colour and washed to remove any impurities. The glass is then crushed and melted, then moulded into new products such as bottles and jars. Waste glass may also be used for alternative purposes such as brick manufacture or decorative uses.
