Christmas at CheaperWaste – Proudly supporting Crisis at Christmas.
Every Christmas at CheaperWaste for the last 4 years, we donate bins and collect the waste for free at the Crisis this Christmas event in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
“Crisis at Christmas” is an annual event run by local volunteers to provide help for the homeless and people on their own over the Christmas period. Volunteers work throughout November, December, and some into January providing support, but the main event is a Christmas dinner, held on Christmas Day and Boxing day.
CheaperWaste, along with our partners Biffa and Keenan Recycling will be providing bins and collections free of charge.
CheaperWaste staff will also be supporting local charity, Destiny Streetworx, and their Christmas “shoebox appeal”, which aims to provide gifts to the homeless in Newcastle.
Destiny Streetworx is a local charity that works with homeless people in Newcastle. This year they are appealing for donations of Christmas gifts to give to vulnerable homeless adults and make their festive period a little brighter.
If you’d like to get involved, you’ll need to fill a medium-sized shoebox with appropriate items such as the following:
• Warm hat / Gloves / Socks
• Underwear (boxers sized medium or large, or knickers sized 12)
• Sweets / Biscuits
• Juice or water
• Baby wipes / Tissues
• Deodorant (not aerosol)
• Toothpaste / Toothbrush
• Greggs/Costa gift vouchers (these are really popular as it will help a homeless person get themselves a hot drink or meal)
“The link between waste management and homelessness may not seem obvious, but rough sleepers often take refuge in wheelie bins, putting themselves at a great risk.” Commented Stewart Renfrew, Managing Director of the Cheapergroup “At CheaperWaste we’re committed to working closely with the local community to improve the lives of homeless men and women in Newcastle and beyond.”
