We’ve asked some questions about our users’ bin cleaning habits, and here are the results which may make you think about how to clean your bin:

Environmental Protection Act pie chart regarding bin cleanliness

The Environmental Protection Act of 1970 is an American law, but the UK government has described this point as good practice for businesses in the UK- and is strongly recommended by various local councils.

Dirty bins cause problems especially in the winter, when the contents can freeze, and your waste provider wouldn’t be able to open the lid to make a collection.

It is recommended that you get a bin cleaning service or wash your own bin somewhat often. Monthly is suggested, but if you work in food, it may be beneficial to do this more often.

None of the participants had ever used a cleaning service, instead opting to do it themselves. While this is cheaper, there are laws you have to follow to do this- if you don’t want a penalty for allowing detergent to flow into a road gully, or for causing pollution, we recommend using a bin-cleaning service.

Hopefully, more businesses get in on cleaning their bins or getting someone else to! Here are some reasons why it is beneficial for you:

Cleaning your bin keeps odours down

Even if you are being diligent and making sure everything is sealed before being thrown away, liquids and other business waste will seep out occasionally. When this happens, all of these items gradually get lodged at the base of the bin, and never cleaned. Over time they can emit quite a strong smell.

By cleaning the bin often, you can minimise this build-up and reduce the smell that’s being given off.

If you do not clean your bin it will become an Eye-sore for public-facing businesses

As a business, it doesn’t leave a good impression to have a dirty, smelly bin in the public view outside your premises. This is especially the case if you’re a store, bar or other company that has customers in all the time.

Cleaning the bin makes your location more presentable by far.

Cleaning your bin prevents infestation

Your bin essentially acts as a buffet for flies, rats and other animals that can ruin your reputation amongst customers. There are a lot of horror stories and videos on social media, of mischiefs of rats running around in alleyways behind stores, and your business shouldn’t be next in someone’s news feed.

When you clean your bin, you can get rid of this extra food at the bottom of your bin, and reducing the chance of a pest being attracted to your bin.

Cleaning minimises germs

Listeria, Salmonella and E-coli are just some of the germs typically found near waste. All of these can be dangerous to your health. As waste sticks to the inside of the bin, these germs start to spread around its entire surface, including the top of the lid.

Each time you touch the lid, you expose yourself to these germs, and cleaning keeps everyone safer.
